UE sweeps 1st round of UAAP junior basketball

MANILA – University of the East clobbered Adamson University, 85-63, to sweep the first round of the UAAP Season 87 juniors basketball at Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Sunday.
 
Enrico Bungar led the Junior Warriors with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 21 minutes of action.
 
Jolo Pascual chipped in 13 points, four assists, and two steals, while Ethan Oraa had 12 points, three rebounds and three steals for UE (7-0), which posted its biggest lead at 77-53 in the final six minutes.
 
Gab Delos Reyes contributed 11 points, four rebounds and three blocks; Mav Mesina added nine points, six rebounds and three assists; and Kiefer Pangilinan had six points and six assists.
 
“We still have many to work on,” UE coach Andrew Estrella said. “Throughout the first round, I saw a lot of things we need to improve on. Especially this game, this is a bad game for us. For my boys, it’s not enough to play for 20, 30, or 10 minutes. It should be a full 40 minutes. We’ve learned a lot of lessons.”
 
Chrys Jeriel Gomez paced Adamson (1-6) with 18 points and four assists; followed by Craig Dann Fongtong with 17 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two blocks; and Khyian Edison Jordan with eight points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals.
 
Meanwhile, De La Salle-Zobel downed University of the Philippines Integrated School, 75-69, to finish the first round in joint third with University of Santo Tomas at 4-3, behind Far Eastern University (6-1).
 
Jayden Centeno scored 21 points, highlighted by five triples, for the Junior Green Archers.
 
Vince Magan had 16 points, five steals and three rebounds; while Melvin Tailan added 12 points, three rebounds and two assists.
 
“Double effort in practice is needed. We keep reminding and motivating the boys to play their best,” DLSZ coach Penny Laureaga said.
 
Jhustin Hallare delivered 32 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists; while Bruce Tubongbanua contributed 20 points, 23 rebounds, seven assists and two steals for the Fighting Maroons, who remained winless after six games.
 
National University Nazareth School and Ateneo de Manila University are tied for fourth place at 3-4. (PNA)
