MANILA – The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has summoned an alleged drunk driver who was filmed driving recklessly in Bonifacio Global City (BCG) in Taguig City.

In a statement Friday, LTO chief, Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said the driver and his companions appeared “proud of violating traffic rules” in the video that went viral on social media.

“Hindi natin palalampasin ang mga ganitong asal sa kalsada. Kaya tayo ay nag-issue ng Show Cause Order (SCO) laban sa may-ari ng sasakyan at driver nito (We’re not going to tolerate this kind of behavior on the road. That is why we issued an SCO against the owner and driver of the vehicle involved),” Mendoza said.

The vehicle's owner – a resident of Sta. Mesa, Manila – was asked to appear before the LTO central office on Tuesday.

It also required the owner and the driver during the incident to submit a written explanation why they should not be held liable for cases of Reckless Driving under Section 48 of Republic Act (RA) 4136 (An Act to Compile the Laws Relative to Land Transportation and Traffic Rules), Driving While Under the Influence of Liquor or Narcotic Drug under the law’s Section 53, and Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle under Section 27 (a).

The maximum penalty for these offenses is revocation of the driver’s license.

“Failure to appear and submit the written comment/explanation as required shall be construed by this Office as a waiver of your right to be heard, and the case shall be decided based on the evidence at hand. In the interim, your driver's license and the subject motor vehicle are placed on alarm pending this investigation,” the SCO read.

The investigation is in response to a viral video originally posted on Instagram by a page called “Hombre Estu” captioned “drunk driving at BGC” showing an incident that happened along 7th Avenue on Sept. 23.

In the video, the driver was seen driving towards the opposite direction of a one-way street and deliberately swerving the vehicle. (PNA)
