PH National Games: Cebu City wins men's doubles gold in tennis

CEBU CITY -- Locals Marc Norman Enriquez and Norman Joseph Enriquez were crowned men's doubles champions in the tennis competition of the Philippine National Games here Wednesday.

Siblings Marc Norman and Norman Joseph defeated Davao City's Butch dela Cruz and Jonathan Palac, 6-2, 5-7, 10-3, in their championship duel at the City Green Tennis Court.

Marc Norman and Norman Joseph downed General Santos City's Klyde Legarde and Jeric delos Santos, 2-6, 6-1, 10-6, while dela Cruz and Palac prevailed over Puerto Princesa's Francisco Santos and Nathan Sonco, 6-2, 6-4, in the semifinal round.

Meanwhile, Marc Norman and Norman Joseph scored contrasting victories to arrange a championship showdown in the singles event.

Marc Norman outclassed fellow Cebuano Marc Nicole Suson, 6-1, 6-1, while Norman Joseph advanced to the finals after Philippine Soft Tennis Academy's Noel Damian retired in the third set of their semifinal match. The score was 2-6, 6-1, 2-2.

In the women's division, national team's Marian Capadocia and Melanie Faye Dizon of the Philippine Soft Tennis Academy bagged the doubles title in the tournament organized by the Philippine Sports Commission and supported by Smart and STI.

Capadocia and Dizon won over Cebu City's Zethley Mae Alferez and Elizabeth Abarquez, 6-0, 6-4, in their final duel at the Naga City Tennis Center.

Capadocia and Dizon will dispute the title in the singles competition. Capadocia had won the first set, 6-0, when her opponent, Davao City's Socorro Trumpeta, retired during their semifinal match.

The same thing happened in Dizon's semifinal match. Davao City's Lourdes Manulat also retired after Dizon won the first set, 6-0.

In the mixed doubles event, Norman Joseph Enriquez and Zethley Alferez rallied past General Santos City's Jeric delos Santos and Sharyl Nhey delos Santos, 4-6, 7-6 (1), 10-3 to reach the semifinal round.

Enriquez and Alferez will be up against Davao City's Jonathan Palac and Socorro Trumpeta, who won over Pagadian's Nilo Ledama and Laisha Echon, 6-4, 6-3.

Philippine Soft Tennis Academy's Mark Anthony Alcoseba and Tracy Llamas also made it to the semifinal round after beating General Santos City's Klyde Legarde and Krisandrea Yap, 6-2, 6-2.

Alcoseba and Llamas will face Davao City's Lourdes Manulat and Gabriel Perez, who eliminated Pagadian's Alfahdz Matarul and Aira Genetiano, 6-4, 6-1. (PNA)
