PH National Games: Laguna's Laborte reaches badminton semis

CEBU CITY -- Unseeded Lyrden Laborte of Laguna Province eliminated third pick Ros Leenard Pedrosa of the National Team, 21-12, 21-17, to reach the men's singles semifinal of the Philippine National Games badminton competition at the Metro Sports Center here.

Laborte's victory set him up against second seed Lance Ralf Zafra of the National Team, who stamped his class over South Cotabato's Meig Angelo Catiil, 21-3, 21-0, in the other quarterfinal match.

Top seed Solomon Padiz Jr., also representing the National Team, also advanced to the semifinal round after posting a 21-7, 21-10 victory over Marikina City's Mike Jessie Pabustan.

Padiz will be up against Laguna's Reignheart Kim Ga-an, who outplayed South Cotabato's Raymund Arnold Dequina, 21-14, 21-14.

In the men's doubles event, top seeds Alvin Morada and Peter Gabriel Magnaye of the National Team outplayed Jeno Carino and Lyrden Laborte of Laguna Province, 21-13, 21-15, to advance in the quarterfinal round of the tournament organized by the Philippine Sports Commission and supported by Smart and STI.

Morada and Magnaye will be up against Cebu Team B's Mark Carlo Alisoso and Ryan Jay Doromal, who won over Bayawan City's Quiven Rocillo and Sean Jhon Terania, 21-13, 21-15.

Third seeds Paul Vivas and Ros Leonard Pedrosa of the National Team also marched to the next round after scoring a 21-11, 21-10 victory over Davao City's Februck Tancontian and Richie Jude Olayta.

Vivas and Pedrosa will face Mandaue City's John Kebeine Bergantin and John Steve Bergantin, who prevailed over Zamboanga City's Ian Jasper Chiong and Ronito Albento, 21-18, 21-18.

National Team's Anton Cayanan and Joper Escueta likewise barged into the quarterfinal round where they will take on Cebu Team A's Fritz Michael Sagaad and Joseph Albert Patanglinghug.

Cayanan and Escueta clobbered Talisay City's Engel Bert Sanipa and Geremey Lariosa, 21-8, 21-6, while Sagaad and Patanglinghud beat Cebu Team B's Patrick Cabanero and Rusell Siarot, 21-11, 21-13.

In the women's doubles event, top seeds Alyssa Ysabel Leonardo and Thea Marie Pomar of the National Team won over Mandaluyong City's Jeya Von Pinlac and Zyrish Camba, 21-11, 21-17, to forge a seminal showdown with Laguna Province's Danielle Aubrey Masongsong and Jellene Geviane De Vera, who beat Cebu Team A's Emily Rhea Judilla and Tricia Merced Opon, 21-16, 21-11.

Mandaluyong City's Jazmine Jane Ang and May Minuluan downed Cebu Team B's Allysa Dayday and Mitzi Montalvo, 21-17, 21-17, to secure the third semifinal slot.

The last semis berth will be disputed by second seeds Nicole Albo and Sarah Joy Barredo and Cebu Team A's Android Rose Tingson and Mary Kathleen Faith Verallo.

Albo and Barredo defeated Laguna Province's Jochelle Alvarez and Kate Angel Amigable, 21-10, 21-16, while Tingson and Verallo downed Davao City's Jackie Lyn Pana and Jannelee Rozette Tabunan, 21-9, 21-14, in the quarterfinal.

In the mixed doubles event, top seeds Alvin Morada and Alyssa Ysabel Leonardo defeated Zamboanga City's Ronito Albento and Cj Joy Bondoc, 21-10, 21-6, to advance in the semifinal round against Jeno Carino and Jellene Geviane De Vera, who won over Davao City's Vetrimar Concepcion and Marinel Diansay, 21-16, 21-14.

Second seeds Peter Gabriel Magnaye and Thea Marie Pomar of the National Team conquered Cebu Team A's James Ryan Villarante and Tricia Merced Opon, 21-10, 21-12, to forge a semifinal duel with Reignheart Kim Ga-an and Danielle Aubrey Masongsong, who beat General Santos City's Carlo James Villeza and Meden Rose Calicaran, 21-14, 21-4.
