PH Nat'l Games: Padiz crowned men's singles badminton champ

CEBU CITY - Top seed Solomon Padiz Jr. downed second seed and fellow national player Lance Ralf Zafra, 21-10, 25-23, on Friday to win the men's singles gold medal in the Philippine National Games badminton competition at the Metro Sports Center here.

Lyrden Laborte and Reignheart Kim Ga-an of Laguna Province bagged the bronze medals.

In the men's doubles event, National Team's Anton Cayanan and Joper Escueta stunned teammates and top seeds Alvin Morada and Peter Gabriel Magnaye, 21-13, 16-21, 21-11, to clinch the gold medal.

Third seeds Paul Vivas and Ros Leonard Pedrosa, also representing National Team, and Cebu Team A's Dexter Opalla and James Ryan Villarante settled for the bronze medals.

Meanwhile, top seed Sarah Joy Barredo of the National Team outplayed teammate and second-ranked Nicole Albo, 21-15, 21-13, in the women's singles final of the tournament organized by the Philippine Sports Commission and supported by Smart and STI.

In the women's doubles final, top seeds Alyssa Ysabel Leonardo and Thea Marie Pomar of the National Team defeated teammates Albo and Barredo, 21-16, 21-9.

Laguna Province's Danielle Aubrey Masongsong and Jellene Geviane De Vera, and Mandaluyong City's Jazmine Jane Ang and May Minuluan took the bronze medals.

In the mixed doubles championship round, top seeds Morada and Leonardo survived second seeds Magnaye and Pomar, 22-20, 12-21, 21-18, to claim the gold medal. Ga-an and Masongsong, and Jeno Carino and De Vera received the bronze medals. (PNA)
