Lady Bulldogs crowned UAAP tennis champion

MANILA -- National University outplayed De La Salle University, 3-1, to sweep the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) women's tennis final series on Tuesday at the Colegio de San Agustin courts in San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan.

NU defeated Ateneo, 3-2, in the final opener last Sunday.

The Lady Bulldogs, who skipped last year's season, came back stronger to collect their fifth title under seasoned coach Karl Santamaria.

Angel Santiago put De La Salle on top after posting a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Zam Dumlao in the first singles match but National University fought back with Mae Bornia and Alliah Elline Tobias Ragunton defeating Jed Vallie Rayne Aquino and Arianne Nillasca, 6-3, 6-4, in the first doubles match; Clarice Patrimonio winning over Aubrey Calma, 6-3, 6-1, in the second singles match; and Canja teaming up with Annie Tumanda to beat Kiezel Diaz and Jenni Dizon, 6-2, 6-2, in the second doubles match.

Patrimonio, the daughter of former PBA player Alvin, bagged her third MVP award while Shaira River of third-placer, Ateneo de Manila University was named Rookie of the Year.

In the men’s division, Ateneo outclassed National University, 3-0, to force a deciding tie on Saturday. NU took the final opener last Sunday.

Marcen Gonzales downed Allen Manlangit, 6-4, 6-4, in the first singles; Luke Flores and Erj Gatdula prevailed over Jeric Accion and Justine Prulla 7-5, 6-4, in the first doubles; and Gab Tiamson scored a 6-7(1), 6-4, 6-3 win over Jeremiah Latorre. (PNA)
